The University of the District of Columbia went on a 15-0 run early in the second half to break open a one-point game and went on to defeat Virginia State, 115-98, last night for their 16th consecutive home victory.
The victory gave UDC (11-3) a four-game winning streak and kept it in contention for a postseason berth in the NCAA Division II tournament.
The Firebirds entered last night's game ranked fifth in the South Atlantic Region. The top four teams in the region go to the regional playoffs beginning March 11.
The Firebirds held a 54-53 lead before scoring their 15 straight points. A hook shot by Lyndon DeBellotte (28 points) started the UDC surge.
But Antonio Harris was the key man during the two-minute burst, contributing eight points. Harris scored 28 of his game-high 35 points in the second half.
The Firebirds took their biggest lead of the game, 80-61, with 10:46 remaining on a dunk by Tim Stanfill. They then cooled off and the Trojans went on a 19-6 run, cutting the lead to 91-79 on a three-pointer by LaMont Walker with 5:58 left.
