Minnesota Twins -- Signed veteran LHP Steve Carlton, who had become a free agent after not receiving a contract offer from the Twins at the end of the 1987 season. Terms of the one-year pact were not disclosed.

Atlanta Braves -- OF Albert Hall agreed to a one-year contract.

California Angels -- SS Dick Schofield agreed to a one-year contract.

Houston Astros -- LHP Juan Agosto, IF Mike Simms and OF Ty Gainey agreed to one-year contracts.

HOCKEY

New York Rangers -- Assigned D Jim Pavese to IHL Colorado.

St. Louis Blues -- Barclay Plager, 46, a former defenseman and coach, is hospitalized with inoperable brain tumors and has elected not to undergo further experimental treatments.

OLYMPICS

Ireland and Senegal have withdrawn from next month's Winter Olympics. Senegal planned to enter a single Alpine skier and the Irish contingent consisted of a two-man bobsled team.

JURISPRUDENCE

New York Yankees pitcher John Candelaria was found not guilty by a jury in Laguna Niguel, Calif., on a drunk-driving charge after a one-week trial that focused on the accuracy of a breath-alcohol analysis machine.
