The AP says he will get a $2,500 raise to $165,000, plus have a chance at incentive bonuses of $207,500. He had wanted a flat $275,000 and the team had offered $140,000. Minnesota Twins -- C Tim Laudner has agreed to a one-year contract at $295,000, plus $12,500 in incentives. Houston Astros -- INF Jim Pankovits agreed to one-year contract.Pittsburgh Pirates -- Signed RHP Jeff Robinson for a year at an estimated $475,000.
COLLEGES George Mason -- G Cindy Baruch has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's player of the week. She scored 39 points in two league games. She was a two-time All-Met and high school all-America at Springbrook high school before leading George Washington University and the Atlantic 10 in scoring as a freshman. She transferred to George Mason last season. Wake Forest -- Tony Black, the basketball team's leader in assists, broke his right leg in practice. He was averaging 7.4 points and 4.4 assists per game. He is the team's second starting guard lost for the season. Robert Siler tore knee ligaments Dec. 30. Utah State -- Basketball Coach Rod Tueller will quit after the season ends and will be replaced by John Smith. Tueller will devote full time to being athletic director. Idaho -- Announced Bill Belknap, athletic director for 10 years, quit to become an assistant to the university president for centennial development programs. West Texas State -- Bill Kelly, fired as football coach, has sued to delay the hiring of a successor. He wants time to appeal his dismissal to the university. He had an 18-13-1 record in three seasons at the school. His first losing season in 15 years was a 5-6 record last season. East Coast Conference -- Suspended F Dwayne Martin of Towson State for two games and F Jim Cleveland of Rider for one for fighting.
HOCKEY Montreal Canadiens -- G Darren Pang was named the NHL's rookie of the month for January. He was 7-2 last month.New York Rangers -- Moved D Jim Pavese from Colorado (IHL) to New Haven (AHL).
