RICHMOND, FEB. 10 -- Forward Daryl Holmes scored 22 points to lead American to a 68-63 upset over Richmond in a Colonial Athletic Association game tonight.

Holmes scored 14 of his points in the first half, in which the Eagles (10-12, 5-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association) built a 42-30 lead over the Spiders (16-5, 6-3).

The loss dropped Richmond into a second-place conference tie with UNC-Wilmington, which AU will host Saturday. AU is in sole possession of fourth place in the CAA.

After leading, 42-30 at intermission, the Eagles failed to score for 4 minutes 36 seconds in the second half, until a Holmes layup put the Eagles up by 44-37.

AU was unable to put Richmond away, due partially to the 5,002 screaming fans at the Robins Center, and the Spiders pulled within 59-58 with 2:58 left on Rodney Rice's two free throws. But again, the Eagles responded strongly to the challenge, running off seven straight points to clinch the game. Dale Spears started the run with two free throws at 2:13, forward Andy Bon Salle followed with a turnaround 12-footer at 1:19, Holmes added two free throws with 1:04 left and Sumner finished the run with a foul shot.
