ANNAPOLIS, FEB. 13 -- Byron Hopkins' layup off an offensive rebound and two free throws by Eddie Reddick lifted Navy to a 90-88 victory over East Carolina -- its sixth straight win and its second consecutive in overtime -- in a Colonial Athletic Association game tonight at Halsey Field House.
Reddick finished with a career-high 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Navy (9-12, 5-5 in league play) now has won 23 straight games in February, dating back to 1985.
East Carolina (7-15, 3-7), which saw its road record drop to 1-11, defeated Navy, 61-49, last month.
Flint Hill graduate Gus Hill nearly beat the Midshipmen almost singlehandedly, scoring 43 points, tying for the most ever against Navy. Bunny Wilson of the University of Baltimore set the mark in 1970.
Following a Hopkins' layup with 21 seconds to play in the first overtime that tied game, 81-81, East Carolina had a chance to win. But point guard Jimmy Hinton couldn't get the ball to Hill. Kenny Murphy missed with seven seconds left.
"Going to Gus was our first option and Reed Lose was our second option, but we couldn't get the ball to either," said Pirates Coach Mike Steele. "I guess Navy overplayed both and forced us away from what we wanted to do."
Murphy opened the second overtime with an offensive rebound basket, but Reddick answered on an assist from former St. John's High teammate Bobby Jones. Dominique Martin's basket again put East Carolina ahead, but a Hopkins' free throw and a forced shot by Lose gave Navy the ball, trailing, 86-85, with 2:29 to play.
Cliff Rees (16 points) put the Midshipmen up by one point, but fouled out with 1:53 to go trying to block a shot by Hill. Instead, Hill swished two free throws to return the lead to the Pirates, 87-86. Hopkins scored the game-winner on Navy's next possession with 1:19 to play off a missed shot by Jones.
Hopkins, a 6-foot-9 sophomore center, finished with 17 points and eight rebounds for Navy. Erik Harris, also from St. John's High, scored 13 points and Matt Nordmann was the fifth Navy player to score in double figures with 14 points.
Delaware 77, Towson St. 74:
Senior guard Tony Tucker tied his career-high of 27 points and Taurence Chisholm added 20 as the Blue Hens held off a rally to claim an East Coast Conference victory in Newark, Del.
Delaware (17-6, 7-3) won its second straight. Towson (11-11, 3-5), which got a career-high 31 points from senior guard Marty Johnson, had a two-game winning streak snapped.
