Thomas Bowman of Suitland and Robin Quinlan of Bowie had outstanding performances yesterday in leading their teams to Class AA Region III track titles.
Suitland won the boys with 85 points. Largo was second with 64, and Friendly third with 60.
Bowie won the girls with 73 1/2 points. Largo was second with 66 and Oxon Hill was third at 47 1/2.
In the boys division, Bowman defeated an excellent field of runners to win the 880-yard run in 1:59.39. The field included Greg Early of Eleanor Roosevelt and Warren Gilchrist of Largo.
Bowman also won the 300 in 37.90 and the 600 in 1:06.2. He ran a 40.8 anchor leg to give the Rams a victory in the mile relay in 3:36.9.
Early won his specialty, the mile, in 4:29.18. Gilchrist finished second in the 880 and the mile.
Thomas Dixon of Largo won the boys 60 in 6.4. Alfred Jordan of High Point was second, also in 6.4. Daryl Stone of Friendly was third in 6.8.
Among girls, Quinlan won the mile in 5:38.43, and the two mile in 11:00.0.
Shauna Clarke of Northwestern won the 880 in 2:30.3. Debbie Pizzino earned some valuable points for Bowie by finishing fifth in the mile in 6:25.18.
Melanie Blackless of Oxon Hill won the 60 in 7.1. Tawanna Shields of Northwestern was second in 7.2, and Allet Wortham of High Point was third in 7.5.
"I worked on my acceleration in the middle of the race," Blackless said.
Janine Winston of Parkdale won her second straight hurdles race by winning the 60-yard hurdles in 8.7. Tina Longmire of Oxon Hill was second in 8.8, and Shields was third in 9.1.
"I was just worried about winning the race," Winston said.
