West Springfield High School won its first Virginia AAA Northern Region gymnastics title yesterday at Chantilly High School. The individual all-around champion was Lake Braddock's Shannon Propps.
The top finishers in each event will advance to the state championship next weekend at Frank Cox High School in Virginia Beach. West Springfield and Lake Braddock qualified as teams for the state finals.
Lake Braddock, the defending regional champion, led by half a point heading into the last event, the uneven bars. But West Springfield, paced by Leeanne Revell's 9.5 on the apparatus, pulled away for the victory.
"There was a lot of hype going into the bars," said West Springfield Coach Gerry Royals. "The adrenalin started flowing and they fed off each other."
West Springfield finished with 106.05 points; Lake Braddock had 105.85.
Propps (35.6) won her first major all-around title with the regional victory. The senior placed second in the vault (9.25), was fifth in both the uneven bars (9.05) and balance beam (8.4) and tied for eighth in the floor exercise (8.9).
"I didn't know I won," said Propps. "I thought I had fourth. I couldn't believe it."
Lake Braddock surprised the Northern District last weekend when it won the title over West Springfield, which was competing without one of its top gymnasts, Rachel Griffin. This weekend, with Griffin back, the Spartans regained the top spot going into the state finals.
