PRINCESS ANNE, MD., FEB. 16 -- Keith Williams scored 19 points and Sean Salisbury had 15 to lead the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore to an 83-75 overtime upset of Howard tonight. The Bison had beaten UMES 14 straight, including a 75-55 victory in January at Howard.

UMES improved to 6-17 overall and 4-9 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Howard is 14-9, 8-4.

Consecutive steals/layups by Mike Rollins and George Hamilton increased Howard's 32-23 halftime lead to 36-23 with 19:28 remaining. The Hawks closed to 46-40, but the Bison appeared to pull out of danger with a 9-2 spurt, capped by Skip Bynum's three-point shot, to a 55-42 lead with 8:27 left.

But UMES, which made 14 of 17 free throws in the second half, kept digging and finally went ahead, 68-67, with nine seconds left in regulation after Salisbury hit a jump shot for three points and another jumper for two points.

Howard Spencer, high for Howard with 24 points, made his first free throw after being fouled shooting with :01 left, but his potential game-winner rolled off the rim, leaving a 68-68 tie.

The overtime belonged to the Hawks as they scored the first seven points, and Salisbury scored six of his team's 16.
