Eric Drayton's layup with two seconds remaining in overtime lifted West Potomac to a surprising 73-71 victory over Mount Vernon in a Virginia AAA Gunston District semifinal game last night at Mount Vernon. Lee also advanced to the tournament final with a 72-56 victory over Hayfield.

West Potomac (9-14) and Lee (19-3) play at 9 tonight at Mount Vernon for the championship. Mount Vernon (19-3), by virtue of its regular season championship, will play the winner Saturday night for the top district seeding in the Northern Region tournament.

West Potomac never led in the game until Drayton got free and took Mike Saahir's inbounds pass under the basket and scored. He was fouled, but missed the free throw, giving the Majors one last chance with one second remaining. But a length-of-the-court pass was intercepted as the buzzer sounded.

"Our kids haven't quit all year, even when we were down to seven players due to injuries," said West Potomac Coach Bill Engels.

"We tried to run that inbounds play at the end of regulation and it didn't work. It's a play that we put in a week ago and he's {Drayton} supposed to come to the ball a little more than that. But he was so wide open, I was afraid he {Saahir} wouldn't see him."

The Wolverines fought back from an 18-4 deficit in the first five minutes of the game and finally tied the score, at 53, early in the fourth quarter. But after David Taylor (23 points, 13 rebounds) made two free throws, the Majors led, 64-57, with just under three minutes to play.

Saahir scored on a jump shot and, after Taylor missed a free throw, Curtis Lawing scored inside to cut the Majors' lead to 64-61. After a Mount Vernon miss, David Rountree (20 points) scored with 1:26 left.

Richie Treger hit two free throws for a 66-63 lead but Saahir's two free throws cut the lead back to one with 59 seconds left. Barry Smith made one free throw, but then missed two in a row, the second in a one-and-one situation, and Saahir tied the game with 37 seconds left.

Both teams had a chance to win in regulation, but Rountree missed a jumper with nine seconds left and Mount Vernon's Greg Beal missed a short hook at the buzzer.
