Starting center Elden Campbell, Clemson University's leading scorer, and reserve forward Sean Tyson have been suspended from the basketball team.

Tyson is out for the season, Campbell only for Sunday's game against North Carolina.

"Both players were suspended for their involvement in an NCAA violation regarding the sale of complimentary passes," the school announced.

"This situation was first brought to my attention this past Wednesday," Clemson Coach Cliff Ellis said. "We did not have all the facts until Thursday and we reported the situation to the NCAA and the ACC office when we had all the facts." . . .

The Pacific Coast Athletic Association has reprimanded Long Beach State Coach Joe Harrington, who used to coach George Mason University. With Fresno State leading, 88-75, and with five seconds to go Feb. 11, he was ejected. After he refused to leave the court promptly, Long Beach State forfeited.

"Mr. Harrington displayed a total lapse of self-control," the PCAA said in a statement. . .

Frankie Allen, 38, who has been Virginia Tech's acting basketball coach, will stay on.His team had been picked to finish last in their conference this season but is 19-6.

"This is probably one of the happiest days in my life," he said as he signed a four-year contract that will pay him $74,500 per year and has a rollover clause after two years . . .

Forward Glen Rice, a junior who is averaging 24 points and shooting 61 percent for Michigan, says he might enter the next NBA draft.
