Charles Smith scored 23 points to become the second-leading scorer in school history and pace No. 7 Pittsburgh to an 87-79 Big East win at home over Boston College.

Smith hit seven of 13 from the floor, including the first three-pointer of his career, and made eight of nine free throws for the Panthers (21-4, 11-3). He has 1,916 points.

Dana Barros led Boston College (15-12, 6-10) with 32 points, hitting six of 10 three-pointers.

N.C. State 87, UNC-Asheville 76:

Chucky Brown scored 25 points and Vinnie Del Negro 23 to lead No. 16 North Carolina State (21-6) to the nonconference victory at home.

UNC-Asheville (13-14) was led by William Funderburk and Ricky Chatman with 22 points each.

St. John's 77, Connecticut 62:

Michael Porter scored 22 points as visiting St. John's (17-9, 8-7) got its 100th Big East win. The Redmen are the second team in the league to reach the mark. Georgetown got its 100th last season.

Bradley 113, Southern Illinois 102:

Hersey Hawkins scored 49 points as No. 14 Bradley (23-4, 12-2) clinched the Missouri Valley Conference. Steve Middleton of Southern Illinois (12-15, 6-8) had 42.

Illinois 76, Indiana 65:

Ken Battle and Nick Anderson scored 22 points each as Illinois (19-9, 9-6) won at Indiana (16-9, 8-7), giving Coach Lou Henson his 500th career victory. Henson, 500-243, is major college basketball's sixth-winningest active coach.
