Chase Monroe scored five goals and upped his total for Virginia's first two games to 11 as the Cavaliers improved to a 2-0 with a 14-7 lacrosse victory over Delaware yesterday at Hofstra University on Long Island. Andy Kraus had four goals and took 16 of 24 faceoffs for Virginia. Delaware, led by John Boote's one goal and three assists, fell to 0-2 . . .

At Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights used two goals and three assists by Pete Tortorella to take a 5-2 lead and beat Navy, 9-4. Navy goalie Joe Donnelly made 14 first-half saves but Navy (1-1) could never catch up . . .

At Guilford, N.C., Sean Burke had two goals and two assists to lead Guilford (2-1) to a 14-7 victory over Georgetown (1-1). The Hoyas were led by Jack Donahue, who had a goal and two assists, and goalie Jim Kenny, who had 23 saves . . .

Scott Marr, Brendan Kelley and Mike Morrill each scored two goals to lead Johns Hopkins (1-1) to a 12-8 victory over Washington College (2-2) in Chestertown, Md.

Baseball: K.G. White, Ty Griffin and David Ivester homered to lead Georgia Tech over Maryland, 9-3, in Atlanta in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for each team. Maryland fell to 2-4 overall and the Yellow Jackets improved to 11-8.

White's solo and Griffin's two-run blast came in the first inning off loser Tom Draper (1-2), who allowed seven runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Sam Drake (2-3) held the Terrapins to four hits, striking out nine in seven innings.

Maryland got to 7-2 in the fourth on an RBI single by Lou Holcomb and a run-scoring double by Preston Warner . . .

In Dania, Fla., Navy completed its Florida trip by splitting a doubleheader with St. Thomas, winning the opener, 4-2, and losing the second game, 4-0. Navy (3-6) managed only five hits in the two games, four in the victory. St. Thomas's Pat Healy allowed just Kirk Delmas' single in game two . . .

At George Mason, catcher Rod Billingsley hit a three run homer in the first inning and the Patriots (6-5) went on to defeat Vermont, 9-1. Vermont fell to 0-2. Earlier, Roger Johnson threw a four-hitter as Fairfield (2-6) defeated the Patriots, 4-1 . . .

Joe McIntyre, Kerry Hughes and Guy Kirk combined for a three-hitter as Montgomery-Rockville (4-4) beat Dabney-Lancaster (0-1) in Virginia, 13-1 . . .

In Clemson, S.C., designated hitter Mike Couture's three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning broke a 6-6 tie and gave Clemson (15-1) a 9-6 win over Virginia (3-3).
