FRISCO, TEX., MAY 27 -- Jan Stephenson, who went to the 17th hole today shut out in the first LPGA Skins Game, sank a $200,000 putt to become the big winner in the $450,000 event at Stonebriar Country Club.
"I've never been so nervous in my life," said Stephenson of the two-foot par putt. "My knees actually were shaking."
Nancy Lopez won $95,000 and Betsy King $45,000 on Saturday, when nine holes were played. The first six holes were worth $15,000 each, the next six $25,000 and the last six $35,000.
JoAnne Carner won $75,000 of her $110,000 with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole.
With no "skins" on Nos. 12-16, they went to the 140-yard, par-3 17th with $200,000 at stake.
Carner, Lopez and King all hit 6-iron shots into bunkers. Stephenson dropped a 5-iron shot to 12 feet.
King and Lopez came out well long; Carner got to 12 feet.
Both Lopez and King missed their long attempts at par.
Stephenson then left her uphill birdie putt two feet short. "I was sick," she said. "It was definitely the worst putt I ever hit."
But Carner missed her par putt and Stephenson carefully coaxed hers in.
The 18th was halved. Carner sank a 15-foot birdie putt to win $35,000 on the first extra hole.
