IN THE MARKET: The Pirates, seeking a right-handed power hitter, hope to complete a trade later this week, General Manager Larry Doughty said. Pittsburgh is said to be seeking Indians OF Cory Snyder or Yankees OF Jesse Barfield; also scouted Brewers OF Rob Deer over the weekend.

The Pirates have been interested in Snyder and Indians' 3B Brook Jacoby for more than two years and nearly swung a deal for Jacoby at baseball's winter meetings in December 1987.

MOVES: OF Dave Gallagher was activated by the White Sox after being on the disabled list since April 28 with a pulled right hamstring. Chicago returned OF Rodney McCray to Class AA Birmingham. . . . The Brewers, desperate for a starting pitcher, recalled RHP Jaime Navarro from Class AAA Denver -- he started last night at Seattle and lost -- and made room by putting OF Greg Vaughn on 15-day DL (foot problems). Milwaukee was left without a starting pitcher for the game when LHP Teddy Higuera's knee acted up again; he missed his last start with it bruised and swollen, had fluid drained Sunday and may not be able to pitch until this weekend. Navarro was recalled despite being 0-2, 4.91 ERA in two starts with Denver; his previous three starts for the Brewers, he had an ERA of 8.76. . . . Expos put RHP Steve Frey on 15-day DL and purchased RHP Dale Mohorcic from AAA Indianapolis. . . . Giants OF Kevin Bass (tendinitis in left knee) went on 15-day DL; OF Mike Kingery returns from AAA Phoenix.

BY ANY OTHER NAME: One thing the Lee Smith trade did was give the Cardinals the NL lead in Smiths, with three (Lee, Bryn and Ozzie). For five years, Ozzie had been the only Smith in town. But he never took the "O. Smith" off the back of his uniform. Why? "I knew we'd get some more Smiths here someday," he said.
