DOWN RANGERS: Rangers' Jeff Russell, the 1989 AL fireman of the year, will have an arthroscopy today in Birmingham to remove bone chips and a spur from his right elbow. He is not expected back before early August. In 20 appearances this season, Russell is 1-5 with a 4.71 ERA and eight saves. Last year he set a club record with 38 saves, going 6-4 with a 1.98 ERA in 71 games.

Texas also placed RHP Gary Mielke on the 21-day DL with a broken blister on the middle finger of his right hand, and called up RHP John Barfield.

Nolan Ryan won't pitch until at least June 8. The plan was to activate him to start this Saturday against the Angels, but his back spasms recurred Monday in a 15-minute tuneup.

HERNANDEZ OUT: The Indians put 1B Keith Hernandez (.200, 1 HR, 8 RBI in 105 at-bats) on 15-day DL. He pulled his left calf muscle running bases Saturday in Oakland. Activated: IF Tom Brookens.
