UPPERVILLE, VA., JUNE 9 -- While the other 15 qualifiers in the $5,000 Junior/Amateur Jumper Stakes charged and crashed around the course, Hollandaise, owned and ridden by Craig Shegog of Charlottesville, went calmly about her business and clocked just over 27 seconds to win the final round of Junior/Amateur jumping as well as the championship.

And after all that running around, she casually walked out of the ring under loose rein. "She knows her job," said Shegog, 20. "Earlier, I told my parents I thought she felt a little tired but she knew when she got in the ring, that first jump, she was raring to go."

Steeledust showed two-time Olympian Joe Fargis something in the preliminary jumper-low class, winning the final round and the championship with a total of 12 points. Fargis also rode Curragh King of Gaelic Star Farm to the championship in the high preliminary, winning today and Thursday for a total of 10 points.

But a championship was not the motivating factor for Fargis here at Upperville.

"You can only do as well as you can every day and hopefully you'll find a Grand Prix horse, that's why everybody's here," he said.

Only a few months ago, Steeledust, of Gaelic Star Farm, did not have the makings of a champion and wasn't showing anything but a propensity to stop.

"He's progressing," said Fargis, who won a team and individual gold medal in the Los Angeles Olympics and a team silver in 1988 at Seoul. "He wasn't very good in the Florida circuit {in the winter}. He used to stop, now he isn't" stopping.

The King, owned by Jean Jacques Aiassa and ridden by Henri Prudent, won the first day in modified jumpers and finished second on Friday, totaling enough points to win the championship. He did not ride today.

Gene Kelly, owned by Catharine Peters and ridden by Tommy Serio, accumulated 54 points in the hunter classes and was awarded the Grand Champion trophy. Cadet's Honor, owned by Red Pfohl and ridden by Larry Glefke, and Private Collection, owned by Winn Reid and ridden by Katie Huber, tied for reserve with 44 points.
