HOMETOWN HEROES: Veteran whitewater canoeist Andy Bridge of Germantown, Md., won the first Wildwater World Cup race of the year in Spindleriv-Mlyn, Czechoslovakia, last weekend. Two more races remain on the circuit in Italy and Yugoslavia. Bridge was fourth in the Cup last year.

Fellow Germantowner Stephen Erich Vincent Jr. won the 1990 Governor's Boating Award for rescuing two people trapped inside a sinking cabin cruiser last summer after their 25-footer struck Vincent's ski boat on the Rhode River. A passenger in the ski boat was killed in the accident.

BAY BREAKTHROUGH: A ray of light in the bleak Chesapeake Bay fishing report: Capt. Mike Sullivan says some schools of large sea trout turned up last week at the mouth of the Patuxent River near Solomons Island and some large spots were caught in Tangier Sound off Crisfield.
