Enrique Hernandez's pinch-hit, ninth-inning single and Mike Gardella's 14th save propelled the Prince William Cannons to a 4-3 victory over the Durham Bulls last at Athletic Park in Durham, N.C.
Jason Bridges led off the ninth for the Cannons with a grounder to Bulls third baseman Dave Brust, whose high throw pulled first baseman Ryan Klesko off the bag. After a sacrifice by Brad Ausmus, Hernandez drove a single past Klesko.
Gardella, who pitched a scoreless ninth for Prince William, now leads the league in saves.
The Cannons had taken three one-run leads before the ninth, but Kevin Castleberry rallied Durham each time. Castleberry, a .225 hitter who batted ninth, homered in the third inning, doubled in a run in the fifth and tripled and scored in the eighth.
Pilots 6, Keys 3:
Marcos Garcia pitched five shutout innings as the hosts closed out their three-game series against Frederick in front of 1,827 at War Memorial Stadium.
Peninsula took a 4-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Damon Saetre and Dan Barbara, and a two-run single from Jorge Robles.
The Pilots extended their lead to 6-0 through seven innings before Frederick's Tim Holland hit a solo homer in the eighth.
Roy Gilbert began the ninth with a double for the Keys and scored when Dan Berthel's single got past the left fielder. Pat Hedge knocked in Berthel with his second hit of the day before Pilots reliever Oscar Rivas picked up the save by forcing Doug Reynolds to hit into a double play.
Garcia (2-3) yielded five hits and one walk while striking out six. Chuck Ricci (4-7) took the loss.
