Mexican Grand Prix -- Gerhard Berger of Austria, his McLaren Honda coping best with Mexico City's 7,250-foot altitude, averaged 128.057 mph to take the provisional pole for Sunday's race. Berger's fast lap came on his fourth qualifying circuit of the 2.747-mile track. Nigell Mansell of Britain, who inherited a Ferrari ride this season when Berger switched to McLaren, was next at 127.346 mph, accomplished on his 20th lap.

Portland 200 -- Danny Sullivan led a record-setting parade in the first round of qualifying and grabbed the provisional pole for Sunday's Indy-car race in Portland, Ore. Sullivan's top lap speed of 122.129 mph edged Michael Andretti, winner of last weekend's Detroit race, who reached 121.643 on his final lap. Sullivan, Andretti, Mario Andretti and Rick Mears eclipsed the Portland International Raceway lap record of 120.054 mph set last year by Teo Fabi.


Miami Heat -- Traded the No. 3 choice in Wednesday's NBA draft to Denver for the No. 9 and 15 selections. The Nuggets obtained the No. 9 pick and another first-round pick Thursday night from Dallas for G Fat Lever.


Miami -- Signed a 10-year contract to play home football games at the Orange Bowl.

Ohio State -- RB Carlos Snow was charged with drunken driving and failure to control a vehicle and CB Vincent Clark was charged with assault and resisting arrest after the car Snow was driving was stopped near the university's campus at 3:30 a.m. yesterday.

Virginia -- Soccer players Amanda Cromwell (Annandale) and Tracey Kennedy (Burke) and Coach Lauren Gregg will participate in next month's Olympic Festival in Minneapolis.


Tour of Switzerland -- Sean Kelly of Ireland won the race for the second time. Kelly, who broke his collarbone two months ago, led over the last four days. Robert Millar of Britain was second and two-time Swiss winner Andrew Hampsten of the United States was third.


North Stars -- Promoted Les Jackson to director of player personnel. He was director of amateur scouting under former GM Jack Ferreira.


Compuware International Classic -- Michelle Collins (Surrattsville High) struck out 16 and allowed only one hit as the Vienna Shamrocks defeated the Boulder (Colo.) Comets, 3-0, in an opening-round game of the 18-and-under girls fastpitch tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. Sara Graziano (Seneca Valley High) hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
