Steve Pittman had a goal and an assist as Fort Lauderdale used superior team speed to defeat the Maryland Bays, 3-1, in an American Soccer League game before 685 fans last night at Cedar Lane Park in Columbia.
It was the Bays' first home loss in eight games as Maryland fell to 8-2. Fort Lauderdale improved to 8-3.
Pittman scored at 34:50 off a corner kick. He headed the ball toward the goal and Maryland fullback Eric Hawkes kicked it away, but Pittman put the rebound into the net.
Maryland (8-2) evened the score on a 20-yard free kick by Rob Ryerson at 58:40.
Fort Lauderdale (8-3) made it 2-1 about four minutes later on a goal by Troy Edwards. Pittman had a free kick from the right side and crossed the ball to Edwards, who headed it into the goal.
Fort Lauderdale added an insurance goal at 74:50 as Pedro Magallanes took a shot from outside the penalty box. The ball was deflected by Eric Eichmann and went into the left side of the goal. Eichmann was a member of the U.S. World Cup team, although he did not play in any of the three U.S. losses.
