SURGERY REPORT: Bulls center Bill Cartwright and point guard John Paxson are doing well, just days after both underwent successful surgery, the team's general manager said.

Cartwright had surgery Monday to remove bone spurs and repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

TIDBITS: Phoenix wanted to send Eddie Johnson to Chicago in exchange for Horace Grant, but the Bulls declined the honor. . . . Guard Brian Shaw is trying to escape from the five-year, $6.2 million contract he signed with the Celtics in January. One problem: He also has a valid contract with Italy's Il Messaggero Roma for next season.

WILLIAMS WAITING: John "Hot Rod" Williams expects to hear the result of last week's arbitration hearing this week. He thinks he's a free agent; the Cavaliers believe he's a restricted free agent. The Cavaliers hope to have the right to match any offer sheet given him. The Cavaliers have vowed to keep him in that situation at any price.
