FREDERICK, MD., JUNE 27 -- The Frederick Keys received another fine blend of pitching and offense as they beat the Prince William Cannons, 4-2, tonight before 3,572 at Harry Grove Stadium.
After losing the opener of the three-game series, the Keys won the last two to improve their record to 4-2 and take first place in the Carolina League's Northern Division. Prince William is 3-3.
Winner Mike Oquist (6-3) yielded one run in eight innings, then Todd Stephan earned his fifth save.
Shortstop Ricky Gutierrez (four for four, two RBI, one run scored) led off the home first with a single to right and took third on Dan Berthel's hit-and-run single to right. Tim Holland's grounder scored Gutierrez, then Tyrone Kingwood grounded into a double play.
After Doug Reynolds and Pat Hedge opened the Keys fifth with long outs to left, Gerald Nielsen hit third baseman Keith Kessinger and walked Tony Beasley. Gutierrez doubled them home.
In the seventh, Prince William's Russ Davis made it 3-1 with his ninth home run of the season.
Gutierrez was the catalyst once more for Frederick in the eighth as it added a run to take a 4-1 advantage. He led off with a single to center, advanced to second on Berthel's grounder and went to third on a passed ball. He scored on Holland's squeeze bunt.
