TEAM DRILL: Entering Saturday the Brewers had lost 10 of 14. Bob Sebra decided the best thing to do was to hit the Mariners' Tracy Jones with a pitch. "I drilled him; I hit him on purpose," Sebra said. "Things haven't been going right for me or the team lately. It was time for someone to take a lump. I wasn't trying to hit him in the head but I was trying to drill him."
A brawl ensued and eight players, including the two principals, were ejected.
Seattle Manager Jim Lefebvre blamed Milwaukee Manager Tom Trebelhorn for prolonging the fight. "I kept saying, 'It's over, it's over,' and Trebelhorn kept saying, 'It's not over, it's not over,' " Lefebvre said.
Said Trebelhorn, "Depending on your perspective, it was the best or the worst ever. Whenever you have events that bring your club together, it can be beneficial."
It didn't help right away: Mariners 6, Brewers 2.
GONE AGAIN: Phillies RF Ron Jones is out for the season after surgery to repair a torn tendon and torn cartilage in his left knee. Ricky Jordan was activated off the disabled list.
Jones was hurt in the seventh inning Saturday against Houston as he stopped short while charging Franklin Stubbs's line drive. The ball bounced over his head for an inside-the-park homer.
Team physician Phillip Marone said this injury is more severe than the one to Jones's right knee in April 1989 that sidelined him the rest of last season.
JUNE: The Red Sox were 20-9 in June; their best June: 21-8 in 1912. . . . Cubs 2B Ryne Sandberg hit .377 in June with 14 homers and 25 RBI. The major league record for June homers is 15, done four times, most recently by Pedro Guerrero with the Dodgers in 1985. . . . The two-time defending AL champion A's are a combined nine games under .500 in June since 1986.
