NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y., JULY 2 -- Six Washington area soccer teams won Eastern Region titles today and three qualified for national championships later this month at Woodbridge (Va.) High School.
The Bethesda Mustangs edged the Eastern New York representative, 2-1, in a shootout in the under-16 boys finals to advance to the McGuire Cup. The Bethesda Alliance won the under-19 boys championship with a 3-0 victory over the Prince William (Va.) Spartans to qualify for the Niotis Cup.
The Springfield Spirit, which won the under-16 national girls title in 1988, will go after the under-19 championship in the Athena Cup. The Spirit advanced to the nationals with a 2-1 shootout victory over Boston.
Only the under-16 girls division (the Masotto Cup) will not be represented by a Washington area team when the national tournament begins July 26 in Woodbridge. The Braddock Road Babes of Northern Virginia lost in the under-16 regional final to Willingboro, N.J., 1-0.
Three other area girls teams won regional titles: The Braddock Road Astros defeated the New Jersey representative, 3-0, in the under-12 finals; Reston United won the under-14s, 4-0, over the Connecticut Comets and VISTA United took the under-17s with a 3-2 victory over Boston. Those age groups do not have a national playoff.
