FREDERICK, MD., JULY 4 -- Rod Lofton's two-out single in the fifth scored Tony Beasley and reliever Todd Stephan got Tim Costo to ground out with the bases loaded to end the game and give the Frederick Keys a 3-2 Carolina League win over the Kinston Indians tonight in front of 4,426 at Harry Grove Stadium.
Jeff Bumgarner (5-4) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing six hits; Stephan earned his third save.
"We got some timely hits, but the game should have been easier," said Keys Manager Wally Moon. "We gave up some hits in the ninth that made the game interesting."
Fabio Gomez lined a single to right and Rick Faulkner punched a single through the left side. Ken Ramos sacrificed the runners into scoring position. Stephan settled down to strike out Rouglas Odor for the second out. Stephan walked Jesse Levis, bringing up cleanup batter Costo, the Indians' No. 1 draft pick, who bounced to short to end the game.
Frederick scored two runs on three hits and an error to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth. Mike Richardson led off with a double down the right field line and scored on a line-drive single by Beasley.
Beasley advanced to second on a single by Odor and scored on Lofton's single, his second RBI of the game. Kinston added a run on one hit and an error in the seventh. Faulkner tripled to center and one out later scored when Dan Berthel dropped Odor's sinking liner to center, which made the score 3-2 and chased Bumgarner.
