NEW YORK, JULY 5 -- Gregg Olson of the Orioles is among 16 first-time all-stars picked today as managers Tony La Russa and Roger Craig filled out their rosters with pitchers and reserves.

Seven of the National League's 10 pitchers, including Dennis Martinez, 35, and Ramon Martinez, 22, were selected for the first time. Relievers Olson and Bobby Thigpen and no-hit man Randy Johnson are new to the American League staff for Tuesday night's game at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

They join three other first-timers whom fans elected to start -- outfielders Ken Griffey Jr. of the Mariners and Lenny Dykstra of the Phillies and catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. of the Indians.

Second baseman Roberto Alomar of the Padres, an NL reserve, is a brother of Sandy Alomar.

Mike Boddicker, 11-3 with a 10-game winning streak, and Nolan Ryan were among those left off the AL team. Both are scheduled to pitch Saturday.

The A's and Reds each had five players picked. Outfielders Jose Canseco and Rickey Henderson and first baseman Mark McGwire of the Athletics were elected to start and La Russa named pitchers Bob Welch and Dennis Eckersley from his own team.

Reds third baseman Chris Sabo was elected, and will be joined by Reds pitchers Jack Armstrong, Rob Dibble and Randy Myers -- each named for the first time -- and shortstop Barry Larkin.

Cecil Fielder, leading the majors with 27 home runs and 71 RBI, and Tigers teammate Alan Trammell were added in the infield, as were Kelly Gruber of the Blue Jays, Julio Franco of the Rangers and Ozzie Guillen of the White Sox. Also named were Angels catcher Lance Parrish for the eighth time, and outfielders George Bell of the Blue Jays, Ellis Burks of the Red Sox, Dave Parker of the Brewers and Kirby Puckett of the Twins.
