Kansas City Royals -- Placed RHP Storm Davis (2-6, 5.30 ERA) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, because of a bruised right index finger, a spokesman said Friday. The team will bring in LHP Pete Filson (12-2, 2.78 ERA) from Class AAA Omaha.


Phoenix Suns -- Declined to pick up the option year on the contract of G Greg Grant, making him an unrestricted free agent. The 5-foot-7, 145-pound Grant was drafted in the second round by the Suns in 1988, No. 52 overall. He was the NCAA Division III's player of the year as a senior at Trenton (N.J.) State in 1987-88 with a division-leading 32.6 scoring average.


Fair Lanes Phoenix Classic -- Ron Palombi Jr. won three matches, including a 219-173 decision over Todd Thompson in the title game, to claim the $18,000 top prize, for his fifth career title.


World Championships -- In Lyon, France, Nnja Fichtel of West Germany won her second individual title by beating Italy's Ita Trinilli, 5-2, 5-2, in the finals of the women's foil event. Fichtel also won in 1986. Third was Soviet Olga Velichiko, the 1989 world champion.
