With Approval, a 4-year-old Canadian-bred colt, set a track record in beating Alwuhush by 1 1/4 lengths in the $87,600 Tidal Handicap for older horses yesterday at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

With Approval ran 1 3/8 miles of turf in 2:12 1/5, two-fifths of a second faster than Noble Dancer II in 1977 and Nijinsky's Secret in 1982.

With Approval, ridden by Craig Perret and carrying high weight of 122 pounds, won his third straight race and fourth in six starts this year.

Alwuhush, ridden by Jose Santos, was a neck better than Green Barb in the field of five horses 3 years old and up. El Senor and Impersonator completed the order of finish. With Approval earned $52,560 and returned $3.40 as the odds-on choice.

Hollywood Park: In Inglewood, Calif., favorite Garden Gal, ridden by Martin Pedroza, took the lead early then held off a pair of long shots to score a three-length victory in the $105,900 Landaluce Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

Time for the six furlongs was 1:10 2/5. Perky Slew, 46 to 1, finished second; 104-1 Lite Light was third.

Monmouth Park: In Oceanport, N.J., Julie Krone took the first step toward her return to competitive riding when she breezed 4-year-old Howling Success. After riding the horse a half-mile, she declared herself ready to race again. She broke her arm Nov. 24 and had surgery twice to repair the damage.
