Before deciding the future of George Steinbrenner, Commissioner Fay Vincent will take all the evidence to his Cape Cod, Mass., summer home. "I will go for a week to 10 days," he said, "and sort it through, consult with my conscience and make a decision."

At the end of a two-day hearing last week to discuss Steinbrenner's dealings with admitted gambler Howard Spira and former New York outfielder Dave Winfield, Vincent gave the Yankees' principal owner until July 11 to provide additional evidence.


There were several bonus babies at the All-Star Game last night. Ellis Burks, Lance Parrish, Dave Stieb, Neal Heaton and John Franco each pocketed $50,000 for being named all-stars.

Ticket brokers were asking $275 for bleacher seats and $1,000 for box seats to last night's game.

Andre Dawson celebrated his 36th birthday yesterday by signing a one-year contract with an option for 1992.

Dawson, who makes $2.1 million this season, will get $3.3 million in 1991. He will get the same in '92 unless the Cubs exercise a $400,000 buyout.


Athletics pitcher Dave Stewart was awarded the 20th Roberto Clemente Award for best exemplifying the game both on and off the field.
