Dennis Gilbert, agent for Jose Canseco, Bret Saberhagen and others, is under investigation by the Major League Baseball Players Association, according to the Los Angeles Times. Gilbert, of Beverly Hills, has been a subject of controversy since before the certification program for agents began in 1988.
The union is most concerned with his alleged method of soliciting clients and retaining them with inducements, the newspaper said. WATCH OUT:
Canseco said he may hire a bodyguard to protect him from fans. "The more I accomplish in the league and the more money I make, the worse it gets," said the A's outfielder, who underscored his desire for privacy by wearing a T-shirt Tuesday with the warning: "Leave me alone."
"Other people have bodyguards," he said. "I met Eddie Murphy, and he had six guys who were bodyguards. They were huge. . . . so huge, even I was scared."
