BOSS VS. BRASS:

George Steinbrenner claims baseball's investigation of him is biased and he may sue Commissioner Fay Vincent if he is punished, it was reported.

The New York Times cited an anonymous source as saying the Yankees owner is unhappy at the way investigator John Dowd has conducted the probe into his dealings with Dave Winfield and gambler Howard Spira and "is convinced Dowd is out to get him."

Vincent, who said he probably will announce his decision within two weeks, defended Dowd and the probe. He said, "It seems to me that people who have something to say publicly ought to speak to the merits and not to the techniques of the investigation. . . . I'll stand by the investigation and I am sure it will stand up to any scrutiny it may properly receive."

MASCOT VS. MANAGER:

Dave Cash lost his job as manager of the Batavia Clippers after his wife got upset with Chipper the Clipper.

Pamela Cash said the team mascot -- a blue-feathered, yellow-beaked type -- blocked her view of the game Monday night. She says she asked him to move, then tapped him on the shoulder. Chipper moved, but not to her liking.

"He shook his behind in my face in front of my two young children," she said. "I thought that kind of behavior by a mascot at what's supposed to be a family-oriented place was totally uncalled for. This wasn't the first time he shook his butt in my face."

Pamela Cash and an assistant general manager argued over the incident, and former all-star second baseman Cash was reassigned by the Philadelphia Phillies to his previous position as roving minor league infield instructor.

WAITING FOR MR. RIGHT:

Cardinals General Manager Dal Maxvill says it will be at least another week before he replaces resigned manager Whitey Herzog. Maxvill said he began with a list of 20 candidates, is still working on getting it below 10, and will consider none of the St. Louis coaches, nor interim manager Red Schoendienst.

FELIX HURT:

Blue Jays OF Junior Felix (.283, 11 HR, 46 RBI) had emergency surgery in California to stop bleeding in his right leg and will miss four to six weeks. Toronto recalled IF Luis Sojo.

AAA SHUTTLE:

Yankees recalled OF Deion Sanders from AAA Columbus; demoted 3B Mike Blowers (.203). . . . Pirates, activating RHP Bob Walk, assigned RHP Jay Tibbs to Buffalo; he could refuse, as he did when Orioles tried to send him to Rochester, but at any rate is off Pittsburgh roster. . . . RHP Walt Terrell (2-7, 5.88, $3.6 million contract) may land in same boat as Ted Power returns this weekend.
