The University of Maryland search committee seeking a replacement for athletic director Lew Perkins, who resigned July 9 to take a similar job at the University of Connecticut, will hold its first meeting Friday to receive instructions from William E. Kirwan, president of the College Park campus.

The 14-member committee is chaired by William L. "Bud" Thomas, the vice president for student affairs. . . .

Texas A&M tapped into its Big East Conference pipeline again, announcing that Georgetown guard David Edwards will transfer to the school this fall.

The 5-foot-11 Edwards must sit out this season but will have three years' eligibility remaining. He averaged 5.4 points and 2.3 rebounds per game last season.

Syracuse's Tony Scott announced plans to transfer to A&M earlier this summer. . . .

Cleveland State basketball coach Kevin Mackey pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and consuming an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle. He was released on bond.

Attorney David Roth told reporters that Mackey hopes to overcome a problem and stay on as the university's basketball coach. He would not specify the problem.

Mackey, 43, who signed a two-year contract last week, has been suspended without pay indefinitely by the school.
