FREDERICK, MD., JULY 16 -- If the rain this past weekend benefited anyone, it was the Frederick Keys (10-11), who swept the Salem Buccaneers (8-15) in a doubleheader tonight, 7-1, 3-2, before 6,566 at Harry Grove Stadium.
The teams were scheduled to start a three-game series last Saturday but were forced to play the doubleheader because of the field had been muddy earlier.
Before retiring after 5 1/3 innings of the opener, Keys pitcher Mike Oquist (7-4) -- he'll be in the Carolina League all-star game for the East on Wednesday at the Prince William Stadium -- caused some concern in the first inning. He gave up a hit and walk and threw wildly toward first before settling down. In the fifth he struck out Romero Armando and Tim Hines to get his ninth and 10th strikeouts of the game, giving him 123 for the season, tops in the league.
The game had beendeadlocked until, in the bottom of the third with two batters down and a runner aboard, Keys outfielder Dan Berthel (.284) hit a drive over the left field wall for his second home run and 26th RBI of the year. It scored Brady Anderson (on rehabilitation from the Baltimore Orioles) to break the game open, 2-0.
The second game closed dramatically. With the bases loaded and two outs, Mike Lehman took a 3-1 pitch for ball four, forcing home Berthel to end the game..
