Peter Vartabedian of Bowie made five birdies as he eliminated medalist Jim Cangiano of Dickerson, Md., 4 and 2, yesterday in the second round of the Bobby Gorin Memorial junior golf tournament at Woodmont's South Course in Rockville.

Vartabedian, who edged Darin Snoots of Nokesville in 19 holes in his morning match, got hot on the back nine in ousting Cangiano, who had shot three-under-par 69 in Monday's qualifying. Vartabedian had birdies on 11, 12 and 14 before closing the match with a par on 16.

Chris Cazalas of Reston, seeded second after qualifying with a 75, beat John Feltman of Rockville, 5 and 3, in the morning and then eliminated Todd Robyak of Centreville, 2 and 1, in the second round.

In today's quarterfinal pairings in the 16-17 division, Vartabedian will face Oliver Coune of Bethesda at 7:30 a.m., followed by Trevor Randolph of Bethesda against Brian Goodger of Laurel, Cazalas against Mike Benner of Laurel, and Craig Bangor of Gaithersburg against Mark McGuire of Vienna.

Coune beat Steve Mays of Haymarket, 2 and 1, and John Rosenbaum of McLean, 4 and 3. Randolph bested Josh Brose of Rockville, 3 and 2 in the morning and Jason Fields of Potomac, 4 and 3, in the afternoon. Goodger beat Kenny Gude of McLean, 3 and 2, and Scott Tiernan of Bethesda, 3 and 2.

Benner beat Ken Insley of Upper Marlboro, 3 and 2, and Robert Goeltz of Pot omac in 19 holes.

Bangor edged Mike Graves of Burke in 19 holes and then beat Malcolm Marshall of Bethesda, 1 up. McGuire defeated Peter O'Neil of Laurel, 4 and 3 and Andy Williams of Potomac, 1 up.

In the morning semifinals in the 14-15 bracket, John Reese of Waldorf will face Ed Lipski of Cockeysville starting at 7:55, followed by Serge Hogg of Baltimore against Bob Duva of Patuxent River.

In the 13-and-under semifinals, Paul VanZutphen of Gaithersburg will play Walter Spurge of Olney at 8:06, followed by G.W. Cable of Oakton against Whit Staples of Haymarket. Competition in the younger age brackets will conclude today; the older group will finish Thursday.
