Jim Wiley, Rich Polak and Mike Gardella pitched a shutout, and the Prince William Cannons scored three runs in the fifth inning for the combination that sent the Peninsula Pilots down, 3-0, before 1,114 at Prince William County Stadium last night.

Wiley (4-5) showed excellent control, going five innings and giving up only two hits. Stopper Gardella earned his second save of the series, pitching one inning.

Pilots starter Jeff Darwin came up the loser, pitching six innings in which he gave up three runs, two earned, off five hits and three walks.

Darwin (6-9) gave up only one hit in four innings before the Cannons started to rock him.

Enrique Hernandez led off the fifth with a single to right before Dave Howell doubled to the wall for a 1-0 lead.

Brad Ausmus and Paul Oster advanced runners with a single and a sacrifice bunt, respectively, before Dave Silvestri took first on a wild-pitch ball four and Howell came home for a 2-0 edge.

The Cannons added another run when Mauricio Zazueta hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Ausmus.

The Pilots attempted a rally in the ninth, but Gardella held them off in a two-out, bases-loaded situation and the Cannons had a five-game winning streak, their longest of the season.
