SWIMMING U.S. Long Course Nationals -- Erika Hansen of the University of Texas defeated Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:40.84 in Austin, Tex. Evans finished second in 4:41.07. . . . Nicole Haislett, who has the world's best time this year in the 100-meter freestyle (55.63), swam a 55.84 to defeat Julie Cooper (56.20), Jenny Thompson (56.21) and Ashley Tappin (56.35). . . . Eric Wunderlich swam a 1:01.89 in the 100-meter men's breaststroke to defeat Kirk Stackle (1:02.14), Nelson Diebel (1:02.40) and Washingtonian Roque Santos (1:02.87) of the Curl-Burke Swim Club.
BOAT RACING Columbia Cup -- Tom D'Eath piloted Miss Budweiser to an easy victory in the unlimited hydroplane race in Kennewick, Wash. Miss Budweiser averaged 131.4 mph in winning the final heat. Because of lane violations against a pair of other top-running boats, Holset-Miss Mazda, driven by Mike Hanson, was second, averaging 111.7 mph. Cooper's Express, at 104.3 mph, was third.
