FREDERICK, MD., JULY 30 -- Some timely hits and a solid pitching performance by Pat Leinen gave the Frederick Keys a 3-1 Carolina League win tonight over Durham tonight before 4,677 fans at Harry Grove Stadium.
Leinen (4-3), pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run. Todd Stephan struck out two and walked one to earn his 11th save.
Pedro Borbon (4-3) was the loser.
Frederick (15-18) tied the game in the fifth on Doug Reynolds's home run just inside the left field foul pole.
Tony Beasley opened the fifth by lining a double to the gap in right-center. He advanced to third on Ricky Gutierrez's grounder to second and scored on Tim Holland's sucide squeeze bunt attempt that Borbon misplayed.
The Keys' offense came through again in the seventh, getting three hits. Dan Berthel hit a one-out single to left and Roy Gilbert smacked a high bouncer over shortstop Rich Maloney's head, which spelled the end for Borbon. Pinch hitter Ed Horowitz greeted reliever Pat Tilmon with a double off the left field wall to score Berthel.
Leinen's only trouble came in the fourth. Brian Champion led off by smashing a base hit to left, advanced to third on Edwin Alicea's hit-and-run single to center and scored on Johnny Cuevas's sacrifice fly to center.
