SETTLEMENT:

A Milwaukee County Circuit Court jury awarded $24.7 million to Randy Ready's wife, Dorene, who was disabled after taking diet pills prescribed by a physician.

Ready, a former Brewers infielder now with the Phillies, said diet pills prescribed by Vincenta Yap in 1986 caused his wife, now 28, to suffer a heart attack that left her a spastic quadriplegic.

Dorene Ready, who lives in a nursing home in Del Mar, Calif., can receive care at home because of the jury's 11-1 decision, said attorney Donald A. Shapiro. The award includes $15,486,325 for medical expenses past and future, $4 million for suffering, $4 million to Ready, $1 million for their three sons and $260,000 for child care.
