Tight end Clint Didier, part of three Washington Super Bowl teams, retired after two seasons with the Green Bay Packers. The 31-year-old Didier had caught 12 passes since signing with the Packers as a free agent in 1988.
"I know he's real close to his family," Packers Coach Lindy Infante said, "and I know there is a lot of concern about being away from them and the children at the point he was in his career."
Didier retired on a day that two veterans, defensive end Robert Brown and defensive back Ron Pitts, showed up for their first practices after ending two-week contract holdouts.
Colts: Running back Eric Dickerson, ready to report to camp after a lengthy feud with the club, failed a physical because of an injury to his left hamstring.
The injury "is a strained left hamstring, which Dickerson sustained on his own during training," the team said in a brief statement. No details were provided by the club.
Buccaneers: Disgruntled quarterback Chris Chandler, acquired from the Colts agreed to terms of a renegotiated contract.
The Buccaneers and Colts announced a tentative trade July 31, but the deal fell apart when Tampa Bay and Chandler couldn't agree on how much he would earn the last two years of a four-year contract he signed in 1988. Details were not disclosed.
Giants: Veteran linebacker Dwayne Jiles was among four players waived. Others released were wide receiver Philip Ng, guard Gary Barlow and linebacker Aaron Chubb, all free agents. Lineman Eric Dorsey ended his holdout after agreeing to a two-year contract.
Tight end Mark Bavaro, who had a surgical pin removed from his left knee last week, returned to practice on a limited basis.
Jets: Wide receiver Chris Burkett abruptly decided to retire, walking out of training camp following a meeting with Coach Bruce Coslet.
Seahawks: Wide receiver Brian Blades returned to practice after sitting out Saturday's exhibition game against the Denver Broncos in a contract dispute.
Cornerback James Jefferson will be out about 10 more days with a pulled calf muscle. Linebacker Dave Ahrens is for arthroscopic surgery on his knee and defensive end Jacob Green sat out with a sore Achilles tendon.
