Hilda Cain of Army Navy made a hole-in-one on No. 16, but golfers from Montgomery Village dominated the first round of match play in the Women's District Championships yesterday at Norbeck Country Club.
In a showdown between two Montgomery Village club members, Cami Berher beat Shirley Kushner, 1 up. Other Montomery Village winners were Sharon Briggs, who edged Ellen McGowar (Springfield), 3 and 2, and Lynday Dindseil, who defeated Laura Miller (Bethesda), 3 and 1.
Rita Chadwick (Lakewood) broke Montgomery Village's domination by defeating Cindy Carlin, 2 up. Shawn McCullough (Woodlawn) beat Joanne Quinn (Montgomery), 6 and 4. Carol Mills (Army Navy) finished off the top flight by beating Corene Turner (Westwood), 5 and 4.
Second-round match play will start at 8:30 this morning.
Weather and course conditions were favorable at the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Junior Open at Congressional Country Club.
In the 16-17 division, Jim Cangiano of Dickerson, Md., and Bethesda's Trevor Randolph remained the front-runners. After two rounds, Cangiano totaled 72-74 -- 146 to hold a slight lead over Randolph, who shot 72-75 -- 147. Adam Corson of Potomac was third after posting 77-74 -- 151.
In the 14-15 division, Bobby Bilbo of Olney remained in control heading into today's final round, which will begin at 7:30. He shot 81-74 -- 155, with Vienna's Ken Kuehler (79-81 -- 160) and Congressional's Sam Boyd (78-83 -- 161) his closest challengers.
The 13-and-under flight concluded with G.W. Cable of Oakton shooting 77-76 -- 153, followed by Paul Wills of Glenn Dale, 83-83 -- 186.
