LOCALLY D.C. Road Runners -- Cassie O'Neill of Burke ran a 4:43.8 mile and Cindy Dalrymple, 48, of Arlington came within four seconds of an age-group world mile record with a 5:34.4 time in the club's annual championship races at T.C. Williams High School.

COLLEGES N.C. State -- Four offensive players will not play this season, according to the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer: T Scott Adell will not play because of a recurring shoulder injury and FB Dan Hayden has an intestinal infection; WRs Chris Corders and Shad Santee are off the team because of disciplinary reasons, according to Coach Dick Sheridan.

AUTO RACING NASCAR -- In Watkins Glen, N.Y., rookie Troy Beebe, 28, is in serious but stable condition at a Pennsylvania hospital with a concussion and abrasions; Dick Trickle and Mark Martin had minor injuries.

SWIMMING International Cup -- Anders Holmertz of Sweden swam the fastest 200-meter freestyle of the year, clocking 1 minute 7.28 seconds in Rome. Holmertz came within 59-hundredths of a second of the world record set by Italian Giorgio Lamberti last year. American Ray Carey won the 200 butterfly (1:59.65).
