The Royals put left-handed reliever Mark Davis on the 15-day DL after the commissioner's office increased DL guidelines throughout baseball. He has a 1-7 record, five saves, a 6.38 ERA and a sore left elbow. The rules previously allowed only two players on the 15-day DL. The Royals bought Israel Sanchez from Memphis. . . .
The Indians put first baseman Keith Hernandez on the 15-day DL retroactive to Aug. 1. It's the third time his bad leg has disabled him this season, and the Indians apparently hope he will give up his big contract and quit baseball. The Indians bought left-handed reliever Efrain Valdez from their Colorado Springs affiliate.
The Mets scratched left fielder Kevin McReynolds from last night's game because he had back spasms after the bench-clearing brawl Thursday between the Mets and Phillies.
STILL A YANK?:
Tim Leary will become a free agent at the end of the season and he's making it known he wants to return to the Yankees. "If they want me, I want to come back," he said Thursday after he and Lee Guetterman pitched a two-hitter to beat the Mariners and Matt Young, 1-0. "I just haven't seen any signs of that."
