Budweiser at the Glen -- Dale Earnhardt set a track qualifying record in winning the pole for Sunday's NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, N.Y. It was the second pole in a row for the three-time Winston Cup champion, who had gone three years without winning a pole until he did so two weeks ago at Talladega Superspeedway. Earnhardt, who trails series leader Mark Martin by one point, drove his Chevrolet Lumina to a lap of 121.190 mph, which bettered Geoff Bodine's 120.501 in 1988.
Miami Heat -- Asked for waivers on G Scott Haffner.
International Cup -- Whitney Hedgepeth (200-meter freestyle), Beth Barr (200 backstroke) and Trina Radeke (200 butterfly) scored victories for the United States in Rome. Pam Minthorn of Darnestown, Md., was second to Radeke.

Maryland-Eastern Shore -- Named Bobby Wilkerson, an assistant at the University of Colorado, basketball coach. A former first-round draft choice of the Seattle SuperSonics, he played collegiately for Indiana and was a member of its 1976 NCAA championship team.
