Offensive linemen Louis Cheek of the Dallas Cowboys and rookie John Brandom of the Phoenix Cardinals were suspended yesterday for violating the NFL's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.
A statement by the NFL said the action was taken after the players tested positive in training camp physicals.
Cheek and Brandom were suspended for two weeks. If their systems are then shown to be clear, they can resume practicing and playing. However, they will be suspended without pay and placed on the reserve-non-football injury list for the first three weeks of the regular season.
Cheek, a 6-foot-6, 295-pound tackle from Texas A&M, played 28 games in two seasons for the Dolphins before being released Feb. 1.
Brandom, a 6-2, 273-pound tackle from Arizona, signed with Phoenix as a free agent.
49ers: Wide receiver Jerry Rice and linebacker Bill Romanowski exchanged punches on the first play of practice as the team sought to shake off a sloppy 23-13 loss to the Los Angeles Raiders on Saturday.
Coach George Seifert helped break up the scuffle.
Broncos: Coach Dan Reeves could be back to work as early as Monday after undergoing treatment for blockages of his coronary artery.
Reeves was scheduled to be reexamined yesterday at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City, Calif.
Falcons: Cornerback Deion Sanders finally showed up at training camp, two weeks after he left the New York Yankees.
"I took the time off to rest my body. There isn't one other man in this world who knows what your body goes through," Sanders said after participating in afternoon practice.
Sanders has been fined $37,000 for missing 18 days of training camp and the team's July minicamp.
BENGALS: TE Jim Riggs (knee injury) will miss two to four weeks.
CARDINALS: Waived rookie DL Mike Applewhite.
PACKERS: Vice President Tom Braatz said agent for holdout QB Don Majkowski turned down one-year, $1.2 million-plus offer. The former Virginia star is seeking five-year, $14 million contract.
PATRIOTS: OG Sean Farrell had shoulder surgery.
SAINTS: Starting DBs Brett Maxie and Toi Cook ended 26-day holdouts. Cut were LB Steven DeShazer and P Kevin Brown.
