Eric Dickerson probably will miss the Indianapolis Colts' season opener but should be ready to play by the end of September, his doctor said yesterday.

Orthopedic surgeon Tom Parr said Dickerson should be able to return to the Colts in three to four weeks. Indianapolis opens its season Sept. 9 at Buffalo.

Parr predicted Dickerson's injured left hamstring would be almost fully recovered when he returns to the Colts and that the running back would need less than a week of practice to regain his sharpness.

Dickerson injured his left hamstring while working out in the offseason. Colts General Manager Jim Irsay said the injured muscle tested 40 percent weaker than Dickerson's right hamstring.

Broncos: Coach Dan Reeves returned to training camp, saying he was refreshed after having surgery for blocked arteries.

"I'm going to be as mean and ornery as I've always been," he said. "As far as my heart is concerned, I'm going to continue what I've been doing."

While Reeves did not have a heart attack, the 46-year-old coach was sufficently warned to take better care of himself. He said he'll watch his diet and try to get his cholesterol level down. Otherwise, it's business as usual. "I feel real fortunate that everything went smoothly," he said. "I'm back full time; there are no restrictions."

Saints: Quarterback Tommy Kramer is expected to sign a contract with the team today and begin trying to regain his Pro Bowl form of 1986.
