LYNCHBURG, VA., AUG. 15 -- If the Vienna entry in the Region II American Legion baseball tournament is going to advance, it will have to do it the hard way.

One week after winning the Virginia state tournament, Post 180 dropped a 6-5 decision to New Jersey Post 72 in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament at Lynchburg's City Stadium.

New Jersey scored four runs in the fourth inning off Brandan Nass to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead.

New Jersey's Kevin Cunane led off the fourth with a double. A walk and a single later, the bases were loaded for Jeff Manudo, who cleared them with a triple over right fielder Jeff Ford. Manudo scored what proved to be the decisive run on Jeff Kauffman's fly ball.

Vienna scored twice in the seventh inning after Mike Appleton and Justin May singled and pinch hitter Scott Shulsinger walked to load the bases. Appleton scored on Steve Paasch's grounder, and Travis Dodson, who ran for Shulsinger, scored on Ford's grounder.

Vienna scored first after Kevin Ford led off the second with a double. One out later he came home on Jeff Kogok's single.

The teams traded runs each inning until New Jersey's big fourth.

Vienna will meet Pennsylvania Post 317 Thursday morning at 10 a.m. Pennsylvania was a 7-1 loser to Maryland Post 226 earlier today.
