Now that Ken Griffey Sr. no longer works for the Reds, he might wind up playing with son Ken Jr. on the Mariners.
There would be problems to work out. The Reds apparently told the elder Griffey to go on the voluntarily retired list. If he did, he would remain Reds property; moreover players cannot slide on and off that list quickly.
First baseman Pedro Guerrero, who leads the St. Louis Cardinals with 69 RBI and 40 extra-base hits, is hospitalized with an acute lower back strain. He's expected to stay there two or three days for tests.
The Red Sox recalled Mike Marshall from rehab in Pawtucket and sent infielder Rick Lancellotti there. . . . The Giants bought right-hander Rick Rodriguez, 29, who was 3-1 in Phoenix, and designated first baseman Mike Laga for assignment. . . . . The Twins recalled right-hander Paul Abbott, 22, from Portland, where he was 5-14 with a 4.56 ERA. . . .
The Angels put right-hander Bert Blyleven on the 15-day DL retroactive to Aug. 11 with a sore right shoulder. Joe Grahe comes up from Edmonton. . . .
The Cubs optioned left-hander Lance Dickson, 20, to Iowa and bought right-hander Dave Pavlas (8-3, eight saves) from there. Dickson, their No. 1 draft pick last June was 0-3. Manager Don Zimmer says Dickson has a tired arm and won't be recalled next month. Pavlas is 28.
