Boston Celtics -- Reportedly have signed F Eric McArthur of Cal-Santa Barbara to a guaranteed contract. Golden State and Washington both had shown interest in McArthur.


NABF Welterweight Title -- Lonnie Smith (26-2-1, 13 KOs) stopped Henry Anaya (16-2, 10 KOs) by technical knockout after 10 rounds Monday night to take the title relinquished by Aaron Davis.


Longwood -- Assistant basketball coach Ron Carr of Virginia Tech has been named head basketball coach, replacing Cal Luther.

Maryland-Baltimore County -- F Sonique Nixon, a 6-8 graduate of Oxon Hill, said he would transfer there after playing basketball as a freshman at Old Dominion last year.

Virginia Tech -- Junior LB Brian Williams will be lost for the season with torn ligaments in his left knee. Surgery is scheduled later this week. Junior C Jay Foran dislocated his right kneecap and will be out at least three weeks.


D.C. Adams Relays -- H.D. Woodson High School is host to Saturday event featuring top East Coast age 16-17 track and field competitors. It starts at 10 a.m. and all proceeds will benefit crack cocaine-affected babies at D.C. General Hospital.


OTB Open -- Derrick Rostagno, winner of Sunday's Volvo International in New Haven, Conn., retired with an elbow injury in his second-round match against Grant Connell, trailing 2-1 in the second set. His status for the U.S. Open, which begins Monday, is uncertain.
