ANNAPOLIS, MD., AUG. 25 -- Three varsity quarterbacks combined to throw for 337 yards in a lengthy scrimmage for injury-plagued Navy this morning.

"We tried a lot of things today," said first-year coach George Chaump. "And naturally our defensive unit is ahead of the offense.

"We are very young on the offensive line and we miss the two veterans {Michael Davis and Carl Voss} who are out with injuries."

Chaump indicated his defensive unit was greatly improved and he has been impressed with the work this fall of outside linebackers Tony Domino and Duncan Ingraham and inside linebackers Bill Bowling and Chris Beck.

The defense suffered some blows in the past two days when four players were lost because of injuries and for other reasons.

Junior linebacker Beau Laskey of Valdosta, Ga., a two-year letterman, has been forced out because of a recurring shoulder injury. Senior defensive tackle Dave Christel of East Lansing, Mich., suffered an injury to his left knee during the scrimmage and will be X-rayed early next week.

Promising sophomore middle guard James Allen left school for academic reasons. Junior defensive back Lonny Stare still is bothered by a herniated disk in his neck and is out of action.

"It's discouraging when you lose people like that," said Chaump. "All of them had worked hard for us and would have been contributors to our program.

A total of eight players slated for the first two units has been lost since the start of fall drills on Aug. 13.

In today's scrimmage, senior quarterbacks Alton Grizzard and Gary McIntosh stood out in directing the offense. Grizzard completed 11 of 20 passes for 141 yards, with two interceptions. McIntosh hit on 12 of 21 passes for 171 yards, a touchdown and one interception.

Top rusher was senior tailback Jason Pace, who had 67 yards on 13 carries and a five-yard touchdown .
