The Chicago Bears yesterday cut four-time Pro Bowl safety Dave Duerson, along with 13 others.

The Bears, who have a surplus of defensive backs, had demoted Duerson to second string and there had been rumors the eight-year veteran would be traded.

The cuts included three veterans, two draft choices and nine free agents, bringing the Bears' roster to 58. Tuesday is the deadline for all NFL teams to reduce their rosters to 60. Teams must be at the 47-man limit by Sept. 3.

Coach Mike Ditka said he didn't like the tough choice of putting Duerson on waivers.

"We made the decision to go with the young kids for the defenses we want to play," Ditka said after the Bears finished practice at their suburban Chicago facility.

Duerson, 29, was a third-round draft choice from Notre Dame in 1983. He was chosen for the Pro Bowl after the 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988 seasons.

Eagles: Preseason games are normally unimportant to five-time Pro Bowl selection Mike Quick. Tonight's game against Indianapolis is a different story for the Philadelphia wide receiver.

Quick will be trying to prove himself in his first game action since the sixth week of last season. That was Oct. 15 and since then he's had surgery on both knees -- the second consecutive year his season was terminated early due to injury.

Jets: Marty Lyons, the final link to the famed New York Sack Exchange, is expected to miss the 1990 season after suffering a torn biceps tendon in the first half of Saturday night's preseason game against the New York Giants.

Lyons, 33, was scheduled to undergo surgery yesterday to reattach a tendon in his right biceps muscle and could miss 12 to 16 weeks.

Cowboys: Six players were cut, including kicker Luis Zendejas and running back Junior Tautalatasi.

The Cowboys also waived Plan B signees Terrence Cooks, a veteran linebacker, and defensive end Walter Johnson. Rookie guard Tom Huebner of Pittsburgh and rookie linebacker Dave Harper from Humboldt State also were released and tight end Steve Johnson, running back Keith Jones and safety Scott Ankrom were put on injured reserve.

Patriots: Released wide receiver Glenn Antrum, offensive guard Pat Crowley, running back James Gray, safety Tim Hauck, defensive lineman Charles Jackson, running back Anthony Landry, wide receiver Mike Murphy, offensive guard Chuck Pellegrini, quarterback Michael Proctor, offensive guard Blaine Rose, linebacker Mac Stephens and tight end Kirk Warner.
